Geothermal energy is being used to heat homes in different parts of the world where the earth’s crust is thin and gives access to the extreme heat generated below the earth’s surface. It can also be used for generating electricity, however in most places in the world it is simply too deep to drill.
However there is another way we can use the earth to heat, or in fact cool our homes, this is by using the fairly constant temperatures that are a few meters down. By running a liquid through pipes buried underground we can use the fairly constant temperature to heat our homes in the winter and cool them in the summer.
It will not do it alone but using a Geothermal Heat Pump will dramatically reduce the amount of energy required because of the head start it has with the liquid in the pipes. This means that the energy you are producing with solar, wind and others will be used more efficiently than would otherwise be the case.
US government sources have stated that geothermal pumps are the most efficient means of changing the temperature of a building we have today, the green credentials should speak for themselves.
